O movimento de uma partícula em um caminho curvilíneo pode ser descrito usando os componentes normal e tangencial.
O componente normal é direcionado ao longo do caminho normal (ou radial) até a curva em um determinado ponto. Ele descreve a variação na trajetória do vetor velocidade.
O componente tangencial é tangencial à curva em um ponto específico e caracteriza a taxa na qual a velocidade muda ao longo do caminho.
A equação do movimento de uma partícula em um movimento curvilíneo pode ser expressa usando a segunda lei do movimento de Newton ao longo dos componentes normal e tangencial.
Aqui, a aceleração tangencial positiva representa um aumento na magnitude da velocidade e a aceleração tangencial negativa representa uma diminuição na magnitude da velocidade da partícula.
Por outro lado, o componente normal da aceleração está sempre ao longo do raio do caminho curvo e é positivo quando direcionado para o centro da curvatura. O componente normal da força também é definido como força centrípeta.

Curved motion is described by splitting a particle’s acceleration into tangential and normal parts. These two components help show how the particle moves along a curving path at a specific point.

The tangential component lies along the curve. It shows how the speed changes with time. A positive tangential acceleration means the speed is increasing. A negative tangential acceleration means the speed is decreasing.

The normal component points along the radial direction of the curve. It describes the change in the direction of the velocity vector. This component always follows the radius of the curved path. When it points toward the center of curvature, it is taken as positive.

Newton’s second law is used to write the equation of motion for this kind of motion. The normal force component is called centripetal force. Together, the normal and tangential components give a clear picture of particle motion along a curvilinear path.
