Design Consideration

Ao projetar uma estrutura, as considerações começam com a resistência final de um material, que é determinada por meio de testes, medindo as mudanças sob o aumento da carga até atingir seu limite ou quebrar.
A carga máxima além da qual o material se quebra é a carga final. A relação entre a carga última e a área da seção transversal original fornece a tensão normal final ou a resistência máxima.
A outra consideração importante é o fator de segurança, que é a relação entre a carga final e a permitida, garantindo uma reserva de capacidade de carga para uma operação segura.
O fator de seleção de segurança envolve a consideração de variações nas propriedades do material, cargas, tipos de falha potenciais, incertezas nos métodos analíticos, deterioração futura, importância estrutural e risco à vida e à propriedade.
O método convencional de tensão admissível agrupa todas as incertezas em um único fator de segurança, mas um método alternativo chamado método de Projeto de Fator de Carga e Resistência distingue entre incertezas associadas a uma estrutura e sua carga e diferencia entre cargas vivas e mortas.

Projetar uma estrutura envolve uma série de considerações, principalmente a resistência definitiva do material, calculada por meio de testes que medem as mudanças sob força aumentada até que o material atinja seu ponto ou limite de ruptura. A carga definitiva, onde o material quebra, é dividida pela sua área de seção transversal original, resultando na tensão ou resistência normal definitiva. Safety factors in structural design help engineers choose a material and loading limit that can be used safely. The process begins with a material’s ultimate strength. This value comes from tests that increase force until the material reaches its breaking point or limit.

The ultimate load is then divided by the original cross-sectional area to find the ultimate normal stress, or strength. Ultimate shearing stress is another key value used in design. These limits show how much stress a material can resist before failure.

A factor of safety compares the ultimate load with the allowable load. It creates a buffer in load-carrying capacity for safe operation. Choosing this factor requires attention to changes in material properties, possible failure modes, uncertainty in analysis, future deterioration, structural importance, and the risk to life and property.

If the factor of safety is too small, the structure may fail. If it is too large, the design may become uneconomical or unusable. The traditional allowable-stress method combines the uncertainties into one safety factor. The Load and Resistance Factor Design method separates uncertainties in the structure and in the load, and it also distinguishes between live loads and dead loads.

Normal stress acts perpendicular to a material’s cross-sectional area. It appears when a force is applied along the axis of an object, which is called axial loading. Bridge truss members are a practical example of this kind of loading. When a rod carries axial load, internal forces develop across the section.
