A deformação de uma haste com diferentes materiais e seções transversais é calculada dividindo-a em partes, cada uma caracterizada por parâmetros individuais.
Em seguida, a deformação em cada peça é calculada e a deformação total do membro é calculada somando a deformação em cada peça.
Quando uma extremidade da haste é fixa, a deformação é igual ao deslocamento de sua extremidade livre. Mas, quando ambas as extremidades da haste se movem, a deformação é medida pelo deslocamento relativo de uma extremidade em relação à outra.
Considere um conjunto de três barras elásticas conectadas por um pino rígido no ponto O. Se uma carga for aplicada na extremidade livre da barra 1, cada barra se deformará.
Para as barras 2 e 3, fixadas aos apoios fixos B e C, a deformação comum é medida pelo deslocamento do ponto O.
Para a barra 1, onde ambas as extremidades se movem, a deformação é medida pela diferença entre os deslocamentos dos pontos O e A.

Quando uma haste é feita de materiais diferentes ou possui seções transversais diversas, ela deve ser dividida em partes que atendam às condições necessárias para a determinação da deformação. Cada uma dessas peças é caracterizada por sua força interna, área de seção transversal, comprimento e módulo de elasticidade. Esses parâmetros são então usados para calcular a deformação de toda a haste.


 No caso de uma barra com secção variável, a deformação não é constante, mas depende da posição. A deformação de um elemento de comprimento é expressa e a deformação total da barra é calculada integrando esta expressão ao longo de todo o comprimento da barra.


 Nos cenários onde uma extremidade da haste é fixa, a deformação é igual ao deslocamento da sua extremidade livre. Porém, quando ambas as extremidades de uma haste se movem, a deformação é medida pelo deslocamento relativo de uma extremidade em relação à outra. Considere um sistema de três barras elásticas conectadas por um pino rígido. Se uma carga for aplicada em um ponto, cada barra se deformará. Para as barras fixadas em apoios fixos, a deformação comum é medida pelo deslocamento de um ponto específico. Calculating rod stretch from mixed loads starts with breaking the rod into parts. This step is needed when the rod is made of different materials or has changes in cross-section. Each part has its own internal force, cross-sectional area, length, and modulus of elasticity.

These values are used to find the deformation of the full rod. For a member with a variable cross-section, the strain is not constant. Instead, it changes with position along the rod. The deformation of a small element is written first, and the total deformation is found by integrating that expression over the full length.

The meaning of deformation also depends on how the rod is supported. If one end is fixed, the deformation is the displacement of the free end. If both ends move, the deformation is measured as the relative displacement of one end compared with the other.

This idea also applies to a system of three elastic bars connected by a rigid pin. When a load is applied at one point, each bar deforms. For the bars attached to fixed supports, the common deformation is measured by the displacement of a chosen point. For the bar with moving ends, deformation is the difference between the displacements of the two points.
