Considere uma haste não homogênea feita de aço e latão, contida em ambas as extremidades e sujeita a uma mudança de temperatura.
A tensão e a carga na haste são determinadas desconectando uma extremidade apoiada e permitindo que a haste sofra uma mudança de temperatura.
A aplicação de uma força desconhecida na extremidade livre determina as deformações para as porções de aço e latão em termos de força desconhecida. As deformações resultantes são somadas para chegar à deformação total.
Afirmar que a deformação total deve ser zero devido a restrições ajuda a encontrar a força desconhecida, que tem uma reação igual e oposta na extremidade fixa.
Forças iguais nas porções de aço e latão da haste são consideradas na determinação dos valores de tensão correspondentes das porções.
Finalmente, calcula-se a deformação nas porções de aço e latão e expressam-se as respectivas deformações.
A deformação total das seções de aço e latão é zero e as deformações individuais nas seções de aço e latão são diferentes de zero.

Devido à indeterminação estática do problema, um suporte final é desconectado, permitindo que a haste experimente livremente a mudança de temperatura. Essas deformações são então calculadas e somadas para determinar a deformação total da haste.


 Dadas as restrições impostas à haste, afirma-se que esta deformação total deve ser zero. A steel-and-brass composite rod can build stress when temperature changes while both ends are restrained. The rod is nonhomogeneous, so its two sections respond differently. To find the compressive load, the problem is treated as statically indeterminate, which means the force cannot be found from equilibrium alone.

The analysis begins by disconnecting one support so the rod can expand or contract freely under the temperature change. An unknown force is then applied at the free end. That force creates deformation in both the steel and brass sections, and each section’s deformation is calculated separately.

The two deformations are added to get the total deformation of the rod. Because the rod is still constrained by its supports, the total deformation must be zero. That condition is used to solve for the unknown force, and the fixed support develops an equal and opposite reaction.

The force in the steel part and the force in the brass part are taken to be equal. This lets the stress in each material be determined. The strains in the steel and brass sections are also calculated. Even though the total deformation is zero, the individual deformations in the steel and brass sections are not zero.
