O módulo de massa mede a resistência de um material à compressão uniforme. É definida como a constante de proporcionalidade entre uma mudança na pressão e a mudança de volume relativa resultante.
Considere um cubo isotrópico de volume unitário. Quando submetido a tensões normais, ele se deforma em um paralelepípedo retangular com um novo volume.
A diferença entre este novo volume e o original é denominada dilatação do material. A dilatação pode ser expressa como a soma das deformações em todas as três direções.
No caso de um corpo submetido a pressão hidrostática uniforme, cada componente da tensão é igual ao negativo da pressão hidrostática.
A substituição desses valores na equação de dilatação produz uma expressão que introduz a constante conhecida como módulo de volume, expressa nas mesmas unidades que o módulo de elasticidade.
Materiais estáveis sob pressão hidrostática diminuem de volume, tornando a dilatação negativa e o módulo de massa positivo.
Um material ideal com uma razão de Poisson zero pode esticar sem contração lateral. Por outro lado, o coeficiente de Poisson de 0,5 significa perfeita incompressibilidade.

Quando o corpo está sob pressão hidrostática uniforme, cada componente de tensão é igual ao negativo desta pressão. Bulk Modulus

Bulk modulus describes how much a material resists a uniform squeeze. It links a change in pressure to the relative change in volume. For high school students, it is easiest to think of it as a measure of how hard it is to compress a material evenly from all sides.

The idea becomes clearer when an isotropic material element is treated as a cube with unit volume. When normal stresses act on the cube, it deforms into a rectangular parallelepiped and its volume changes. The difference between the new volume and the original volume is called dilatation. Dilatation is found by adding the strains in the three spatial directions.

Under uniform hydrostatic pressure, each stress component is equal to the negative of that pressure. Substituting those stress values into the dilatation formula leads to the expression for bulk modulus. The bulk modulus has the same units as the modulus of elasticity. Stable materials usually lose volume under hydrostatic pressure, so dilatation is negative and the bulk modulus is positive.

The transcript also connects bulk behavior to Poisson's ratio. An ideal material with a Poisson's ratio of zero could stretch in one direction without a lateral contraction. A material with a Poisson's ratio of 0.5 would be perfectly incompressible.
