Dependendo de sua orientação, o cubo é transformado em um paralelepípedo retangular ou um losango, resultando em deformação de cisalhamento.
A carga axial no elemento resulta em uma combinação de cisalhamento e deformações normais.
A aplicação de uma carga axial aciona tensões normais e de cisalhamento em elementos que são orientados em um ângulo de 45 graus em relação ao eixo da carga.
O elemento cúbico, quando interceptado com um plano diagonal, forma um elemento prismático. O elemento prismático modifica seus ângulos e lados internos de maneira proporcional às deformações geradas pela carga.
Aplicando a fórmula para a tangente da diferença de dois ângulos, a relação entre a deformação máxima de cisalhamento e a deformação axial é determinada.
A partir da lei de Hooke, a relação entre as constantes é obtida. Uma constante pode ser determinada a partir das outras duas.

A deformação ocorre nas direções axial e transversal quando uma carga axial é aplicada a uma barra delgada.  Quando um plano diagonal cruza o elemento cúbico, um elemento prismático se forma. Este elemento prismático altera seus ângulos internos e lados em proporção às deformações induzidas pela carga. Este processo de deformação ilumina os efeitos do estresse na integridade estrutural do elemento. A relação entre a deformação de cisalhamento máxima e a deformação axial pode ser derivada aplicando a expressão para a tangente da diferença entre dois ângulos.

Axial load effects on shear strain are shown by how a slender bar deforms under tension or compression. When the bar is loaded along its axis, it changes in both the axial direction and the transverse direction. A small cubic element inside the bar can turn into a rectangular parallelepiped or a rhombus, depending on how it is oriented.

This change in shape creates shearing strain, which is the distortion caused when angles in a material change. Axial loading produces both normal strain and shearing strain. For an element placed at 45° to the load axis, the normal stress and shearing stress are equal. The shearing strain is also at its maximum at this orientation.

If a diagonal plane cuts through the cubic element, a prismatic element is formed. This element changes its sides and internal angles in response to the load-induced strains. The result shows how stress affects the structural form of the element under axial loading.

The maximum shearing strain can be related to axial strain by using the tangent of the difference between two angles. This relationship helps explain how the two strain types interact. Hooke's law links the material constants, so one constant can be found if the other two are known. That connection is key to understanding how a material responds to stress and strain.
