Nesses casos, as funções de singularidade permitem a representação da força de cisalhamento com uma única expressão matemática, apesar das condições de carga variáveis.
Para derivar as funções de singularidade, um diagrama de corpo livre da viga é desenhado e é conceitualmente cortado em pontos específicos. Em seguida, a função de singularidade que representa a força de cisalhamento em cada porção da viga é determinada.
Aplicando a convenção de que colchetes angulares ou colchetes de Macaulay são substituídos por parênteses quando x é maior ou igual a l, e com zero quando x é menor que l, essas funções de singularidade podem ser diferenciadas ou integradas como expressões matemáticas comuns.
As funções de singularidade são plotadas para representação visual. A maioria das cargas de vigas pode ser dividida em cargas básicas, e as funções para a força de cisalhamento podem ser obtidas adicionando as funções correspondentes para cada carga.
