O pequeno elemento de uma viga prismática atuado por forças de cisalhamento verticais e horizontais, juntamente com forças normais, é considerado para analisar o cisalhamento em uma face horizontal.
Usando a equação de equilíbrio, o equilíbrio de forças que atuam neste elemento é examinado para determinar a força de cisalhamento horizontal. Essa força é então equiparada aos momentos fletores e ao primeiro momento da seção transversal.
A análise do elemento inferior ou do elemento superior produz o mesmo resultado, pois as forças de cisalhamento exercidas entre si são iguais em magnitude, mas opostas em direção.
Observa-se também que o primeiro momento da porção abaixo de uma certa linha no feixe é igual em magnitude, mas oposto em sinal ao primeiro momento da porção acima.
O primeiro momento atinge seu máximo quando a distância do eixo neutro é igual a zero, pois os elementos acima do eixo neutro contribuem positivamente para a parte de integração da equação das forças de cisalhamento horizontal, enquanto os abaixo contribuem negativamente.
Quando o cisalhamento horizontal é dividido pelo comprimento do elemento, o fluxo de cisalhamento é obtido.

Beam shear flow comes from the horizontal shear that acts on a prismatic beam element. The element is also acted on by vertical shear forces and normal forces. To study this behavior, the beam is divided into upper and lower sections by the neutral axis.

The force balance on the small element is written with an equilibrium equation. That step reveals the horizontal shearing force. This force is tied to the bending moments and to the cross-section’s first moment of inertia.

The same result is obtained whether the upper section or the lower section is used. The shear forces are equal in magnitude but point in opposite directions. The first moment of the area below a chosen line matches the first moment of the area above it in magnitude and direction.

This first moment is largest at the neutral axis. Sections above the neutral axis add positively to the horizontal shear calculation. Sections below the neutral axis add negatively.
