Uma seção elementar de uma viga é considerada para analisar a distribuição das tensões. A magnitude da força de cisalhamento exercida na face horizontal do elemento é obtida a partir da expressão de cisalhamento horizontal.
A tensão de cisalhamento média nessa face é determinada dividindo o cisalhamento horizontal pela área da face.
As tensões de cisalhamento nos planos transversal e horizontal da seção da viga são iguais, representando a tensão média ao longo da linha na parte superior da viga. As tensões de cisalhamento são zero nas faces superior e inferior, pois nenhuma força está sendo exercida.
Em uma viga retangular estreita, a tensão de cisalhamento ao longo da largura da seção da viga varia menos de 0,8% da tensão de cisalhamento média, pois a largura é inferior a um quarto de sua profundidade.
Assim, a equação média da tensão de cisalhamento é usada para determinar a tensão de cisalhamento em qualquer ponto de sua seção transversal.
Na seção transversal da viga retangular, as tensões de cisalhamento são distribuídas parabolicamente, com tensão zero na parte superior e inferior.

Shearing stress in a narrow rectangular beam is found by studying a small elemental section of the beam. The average shearing stress on that face is calculated by dividing the shear by the surface area. This gives a simple way to describe how the load is spread through the beam.
