Considere um sinal senoidal e seu espectro, a análise do espectro de sinal amostrado envolve considerar vários valores da frequência fundamental com uma frequência de amostragem fixa.
Quando a frequência fundamental é menor que a metade da frequência de amostragem, o aumento da frequência fundamental leva a uma frequência de saída mais alta. 
Por outro lado, quando a frequência fundamental está entre metade da frequência de amostragem e a frequência de amostragem, aumentar a frequência fundamental diminui a frequência de saída.
Devido ao aliasing, o sinal reconstruído não pode retornar à sua forma original.
A reconstrução precisa do sinal original só é possível quando a frequência de amostragem excede a taxa de Nyquist, evitando assim o aliasing.

A amostragem e reconstrução precisas de sinais são cruciais em várias aplicações de processamento de sinais. O espectro de um sinal de domínio de tempo pode ser revelado usando sua transformada de Fourier. Quando esse sinal é amostrado em uma frequência específica, ele resulta em múltiplas réplicas dimensionadas do espectro original no domínio de frequência. O espaçamento dessas réplicas é determinado pela frequência de amostragem.

Se a frequência de amostragem estiver abaixo da taxa de Nyquist, essas réplicas se sobrepõem, impedindo que o sinal original seja recuperado com precisão usando um filtro passa-baixa. Esse efeito de sobreposição, conhecido como aliasing, distorce o sinal reconstruído e torna impossível recuperar o sinal original.

Para analisar o espectro do sinal amostrado, deve-se considerar a frequência fundamental e como ela interage com uma frequência de amostragem fixa. Quando a frequência fundamental do sinal está entre metade da frequência de amostragem e a própria frequência de amostragem, qualquer aumento na frequência fundamental resultará paradoxalmente em uma diminuição na frequência de saída percebida. Esse efeito contraintuitivo é devido ao aliasing, onde frequências mais altas são indistinguíveis de frequências mais baixas após a amostragem. Consequentemente, o sinal reconstruído é significativamente distorcido e não pode retornar à sua forma original. 

Por outro lado, se a frequência fundamental for menor que a metade da frequência de amostragem, aumentar a frequência fundamental resulta em um aumento na frequência de saída. Esse comportamento se alinha com as expectativas e permite uma reconstrução mais clara do sinal original. Portanto, para uma reconstrução precisa, a frequência de amostragem deve exceder a taxa de Nyquist, que é o dobro da frequência mais alta presente no sinal original. Ao atingir ou exceder essa taxa, o aliasing é evitado, e as réplicas no domínio da frequência não se sobrepõem.

Aderir ao critério de Nyquist garante que a frequência de amostragem seja alta o suficiente para capturar as informações necessárias do sinal original, tornando possível a reconstrução precisa do sinal. Este princípio é crítico em várias aplicações, como processamento de áudio, telecomunicações e aquisição de dados, onde manter a integridade do sinal é primordial. Evitar o aliasing usando uma frequência de amostragem apropriada permite a recuperação fiel do sinal original do domínio do tempo, preservando sua qualidade e fidelidade.

Sampling a signal at the right rate is essential for accurate signal reconstruction. A time-domain signal can be analyzed with its Fourier transform, which reveals its spectrum. When the signal is sampled, the spectrum becomes multiple scaled replicas in the frequency domain. The spacing between these replicas depends on the sampling frequency.

If the sampling frequency is below the Nyquist rate, the replicas overlap. The Nyquist rate is twice the highest frequency in the original signal. Once overlap occurs, a low-pass filter cannot recover the original signal correctly. This overlap is called aliasing, and it distorts the reconstructed signal.

The effect also changes how frequency is perceived after sampling. If the fundamental frequency is between half the sampling frequency and the sampling frequency itself, raising the fundamental frequency can make the output frequency appear lower. This counterintuitive result happens because higher frequencies become indistinguishable from lower ones after sampling.

If the fundamental frequency is less than half the sampling frequency, the output frequency rises as expected when the fundamental frequency rises. In this range, the reconstructed signal is clearer and stays closer to the original. For accurate recovery, the sampling frequency must meet or exceed the Nyquist criterion so the replicas do not overlap. This idea matters in audio processing, telecommunications, and data acquisition, where preserving signal quality is important.
