Em linhas de energia com um relé direcional, as faltas à direita do transformador de corrente fazem com que a corrente de falha atrase a tensão do barramento em quase 90 graus, denominada direção direta. Por outro lado, as faltas do lado esquerdo resultam na corrente de falha que conduz a tensão do barramento em quase 90 graus, denominada direção inversa
Um relé direcional usa entradas de tensão e corrente de referência para definir suas regiões de disparo e bloqueio com base no ângulo entre a corrente e a tensão.
Em série com um relé de sobrecorrente, o relé direcional energiza a bobina de disparo do disjuntor somente quando a corrente secundária do transformador de corrente excede o valor de captação do relé de sobrecorrente e está na direção de disparo para frente.
Operando como um medidor de watt-hora, os relés direcionais eletromecânicos usam bobinas de tensão e corrente e um elemento de disco rotativo.
As faltas na direção dianteira criam torque positivo máximo no disco rotativo, fechando os contatos do relé, enquanto as faltas reversas geram torque negativo máximo, restringido por paradas mecânicas.
Para sistemas de duas fontes, os relés direcionais podem superar os desafios de coordenação, garantindo um serviço ininterrupto às cargas durante as faltas.

Directional Relays

Relés direcionais, essenciais para gerenciar correntes de falha unidirecionais, aumentam a segurança e a eficiência dos sistemas de energia. Em linhas de energia equipadas com relés direcionais, falhas a jusante (à direita) do transformador de corrente normalmente fazem com que a corrente de falha fique atrasada em relação à tensão do barramento em aproximadamente 90 graus, conhecida como direção direta. Em contraste, falhas a montante (lado esquerdo) podem resultar na corrente de falha adiantando a tensão do barramento em quase 90 graus, denominada direção reversa. No entanto, a mudança de fase real depende da impedância do sistema e das condições específicas de falha.


 Relés direcionais usam entradas de tensão e corrente de referência para definir suas regiões de disparo e bloqueio com base no ângulo entre a corrente e a tensão. Normalmente, a tensão de referência é retirada do barramento ou da tensão linha-terra, e a corrente é retirada do transformador de corrente (TC). Quando pareado com um relé de sobrecorrente, o relé direcional ativa a bobina de disparo do disjuntor somente se a corrente secundária do TC exceder o valor de captação do relé de sobrecorrente e se alinhar com a direção de disparo direto.


 Os relés direcionais eletromecânicos funcionam de forma semelhante aos medidores de watt-hora. Eles incorporam bobinas de tensão e corrente junto com um elemento de disco giratório. Falhas de direção direta produzem torque positivo máximo no disco giratório, fechando os contatos do relé. Por outro lado, falhas reversas geram torque negativo máximo, que é restringido por paradas mecânicas.


 Em sistemas de duas fontes, os relés direcionais abordam os desafios de coordenação, garantindo serviço contínuo às cargas durante as falhas. Ao distinguir com precisão entre condições de falha direta e reversa, os relés direcionais permitem isolamento de falha preciso e confiável, mantendo assim a estabilidade do sistema e minimizando a interrupção. Os relés direcionais digitais modernos oferecem recursos avançados, como automonitoramento, recursos de comunicação e ajustes precisos de temporização, aumentando ainda mais a confiabilidade e a eficácia da proteção do sistema de energia.

Directional relays help protect power systems by telling forward faults from reverse faults. They are used when fault current flows mainly in one direction on a line. This makes the relay useful for safe and efficient fault clearing.

On a protected line, a fault downstream, or to the right of the current transformer, usually makes the fault current lag the bus voltage by about 90 degrees. This is called the forward direction. A fault upstream, or to the left, may make the fault current lead the bus voltage by nearly 90 degrees. That is the reverse direction. The exact phase shift can change with system impedance and fault conditions.

These relays compare a reference voltage and a current input to set trip and block zones. The reference voltage is often taken from the bus or from line-to-ground voltage. The current comes from the current transformer, or CT. When a directional relay works with an overcurrent relay, the breaker trip coil operates only if the CT secondary current passes the pickup value and points in the forward-tripping direction.

Electromechanical directional relays work much like watt-hour meters. They use voltage coils, current coils, and a rotating disc. Forward faults create maximum positive torque, which closes the relay contacts. Reverse faults create maximum negative torque, and mechanical stops restrain the disc.

Directional relays are especially important in two-source systems, where coordination can be difficult. They help keep loads in service during faults by isolating only the faulted section. By separating forward from reverse fault conditions, these relays support stable and reliable power system protection. Modern digital directional relays add self-monitoring, communication features, and precise timing adjustments.
