O plano de coordenadas, ou plano cartesiano, é formado por duas retas numéricas perpendiculares: um eixo x horizontal e um eixo y vertical.Esses eixos se cruzam na origem - o ponto em que ambos os valores são zero - dividindo o plano em quatro quadrantes rotulados.Um par ordenado de coordenadas representa todos os locais no plano. O primeiro número indica a posição ao longo do eixo x e o segundo mostra a posição no eixo y.As coordenadas funcionam como um sistema de endereços, identificando exclusivamente cada ponto no plano.Por exemplo, um ponto com as coordenadas (2, 3) fica duas unidades à direita e três unidades acima da origem.Todos os pontos com valores de x positivos estão à direita do eixo y e aqueles com valores de x negativos estão à esquerda. Uma linha horizontal representa pontos que compartilham o mesmo valor y e uma linha vertical mostra pontos com o mesmo valor x, seja positivo ou negativo.O sistema de coordenadas tem aplicações no mundo real. The Cartesian coordinate plane is used to find and plot points in two dimensions. It is made of two number lines that cross at right angles. The horizontal line is the x-axis, and the vertical line is the y-axis. Their meeting point is the origin, where both values are zero.

The axes divide the plane into four quadrants. These quadrants are labeled in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the upper right. Every point on the plane is written as an ordered pair. The first number is the x-coordinate, and it shows position along the horizontal axis. The second number is the y-coordinate, and it shows position along the vertical axis.

Ordered pairs work like an address system for the plane. For example, the point (2, 3) is two units to the right and three units above the origin. That point lies in the first quadrant. Negative x-values place points to the left of the vertical axis, and negative y-values place points below the horizontal axis.

Points with the same y-value lie on a horizontal line. Points with the same x-value lie on a vertical line. These lines can also mark boundaries for regions of the plane. A horizontal strip forms between two horizontal lines, and a vertical strip forms between two vertical lines.
