Derivatives describe instantaneous rate of change, which is a key idea in both mathematics and physics. They are used to show how a moving object changes position over time. A derivative at a point is also the slope of the tangent line to a curve at that point. It tells how much the output of a function changes for a tiny change in input.

For the square root function, finding this rate of change starts with the limit of the difference quotient. The algebra is harder here because the numerator contains radicals. To simplify it, the numerator and denominator are multiplied by the conjugate of the numerator. This step rationalizes the numerator and leads to the derivative formula.

The final expression for f'(x) applies for x greater than 0. It shows that the rate of change gets smaller as x increases. For example, when x = 1, the slope is 1/2. When x = 4, the slope is 1/4. These values show that the output becomes less sensitive to changes in input as x grows.

At x = 0, the derivative does not exist because the difference quotient does not approach a finite limit. On the graph, this appears as a vertical tangent at the origin. That point marks an abrupt change in direction. It also shows why continuity and smoothness matter when defining derivatives.
