Inattentional Blindness

Это позволяет экспериментаторам точно контролировать количество времени, в течение которого наблюдатель подвергается воздействию определенного стимула. Это связано с тем, что активность в клетках сетчатки и мозга может сохраняться даже после отсутствия стимула. Пустой экран, особенно темный, позволяет активности сохраняться особенно долго, даже создавая остаточные образы. Маска, подобная показанной на рисунке, случайным образом перестраивает все срабатывания в визуально реагирующих нейронах, вместо того чтобы позволить их предыдущей активности сохраняться после устранения стимула.

2. Проведение эксперимента
<ol>
	<li>Для проведения эксперимента требуется не менее 50 участников, но каждый сеанс очень короткий. Первоначальные эксперименты проводились путем набора участников в научном музее. Библиотека или студенческий городок в погожий день также являются хорошими местами.</li>
	<li>Чтобы протестировать участника, используйте следующую процедуру:
	<ol>

		<li>Спросите участницу, есть ли у нее вопросы, и после ответа на любой из них запустите первый некритический стимул из набора невнимательности. Запишите, указал ли участник горизонтальную или вертикальную линию как длиннее.</li>
		<li>Теперь проведите второе некритическое испытание, а затем запустите критическое испытание, чтобы завершить набор невнимательности.</li>
		<li>После критического испытания задайте следующий вопрос и запишите ответ участника: «В этом последнем испытании или в любом другом испытании вы видели что-нибудь еще на экране, кроме тестового креста?» Если участник ответит «да», попросите его описать, что он видел и где он это видел. 3. Анализ данных

Visual attention helps determine which parts of the visual world the brain processes and how well it processes them. Because attention is limited, people cannot take in everything at once, even when an object is right in front of them.

Researchers began showing this effect in the 1960s. Ulrich Neisser demonstrated that people can miss visible objects when their attention is distracted. Later, in the 1980s and 1990s, Arien Mack and Irvin Rock built on that work and developed a simple way to test how, when, and why people fail to see a whole object.

These studies used regular participants, not people with brain damage or disease. They showed that a person may not notice an object that is directly in view if attention is focused elsewhere. This effect is called inattentional blindness. The video demonstrates the basic procedures used to study inattentional blindness with the methods of Mack and Rock.
