При решении, если мнимая часть не равна нулю, получается общее решение дифференциального уравнения относительно положения и угловой частоты в пределах зависящей от времени огибающей экспоненциального затухания.
В зависимости от угловой частоты система демонстрирует различные типы демпфирования. Когда сила демпфирования мала, угловая частота напоминает собственную частоту. Поэтому в условиях недостаточного демпфирования система колеблется с затухающей амплитудой после совершения нескольких возможных циклов.
В критических условиях демпфирования демпфирующие и восстанавливающие силы равны, а угловая частота равна нулю, в результате чего колебания системы затухают в геометрической прогрессии.
С другой стороны, в условиях переувлажнения сила демпфирования относительно велика, что заставляет систему медленно достигать равновесия.

Виды затухания

Если степень затухания в системе постепенно увеличивается, период и частота колебаний начинают изменяться, потому что затухание противодействует возвратно-поступательному движению и, следовательно, замедляет его (результирующая сила меньше в обоих направлениях). При очень большом затухании система вообще не колеблется, а медленно движется к положению равновесия. Одним словом, сильно затухающая система медленно движется к равновесию, в то время как слабо затухающая система быстро движется к равновесию, но при этом будет совершать колебания вокруг точки равновесия. Напротив, критически затухающая система движется к равновесию максимально быстро, не совершая колебаний вокруг точки равновесия.

В общем, критическое затухание часто желательно, потому что такая система не только быстро возвращается в равновесие, но и остается в равновесии. Кроме того, постоянная сила, приложенная к критически затухающей системе, перемещает систему в новое положение равновесия за кратчайшее время, без перерегулирования или колебаний вокруг нового положения. Например, когда человек стоит на весах в ванной комнате с указательным прибором, стрелка перемещается в своё положение равновесия без колебаний. Было бы очень неудобно, если бы стрелка долго колебалась вокруг нового положения равновесия перед установлением. Силы затухания могут иметь различные характеристики. Types of Damping

Damping changes how a system oscillates by reducing its back-and-forth motion. As damping increases, the period and frequency begin to change because damping opposes motion and lowers the net force in both directions.

When damping is very large, the system stops oscillating altogether. It then moves slowly toward equilibrium. An overdamped system reaches equilibrium slowly. An underdamped system reaches equilibrium faster, but it oscillates around the equilibrium point while doing so.

A critically damped system is different. It moves to equilibrium as quickly as possible without overshooting or oscillating. This is often the desired behavior because the system returns to equilibrium rapidly and stays there.

Critical damping is also useful when a constant force creates a new equilibrium position. In that case, the system moves to the new position in the shortest time possible without overshooting. A bathroom scale with a needle gauge is a common example. The needle moves to its equilibrium position and does not keep bouncing around it, which would be inconvenient.

Damping forces can also have different forms. Friction is sometimes independent of velocity. In many other cases, damping depends on velocity, either in complex ways or simply in proportion to velocity.
