Однако, когда балка испытывает прерывистую нагрузку, требуются различные функции для точного представления поперечной силы в различных частях балки.
В таких случаях функции сингулярности позволяют представить поперечную силу с помощью одного математического выражения, несмотря на изменяющиеся условия нагружения.
Для получения функций сингулярности рисуется диаграмма свободного тела луча, которая концептуально разрезается в определенных точках. Затем определяется функция сингулярности, представляющая поперечную силу в каждой части луча.
Применяя соглашение, согласно которому угловые скобки или скобки Маколея заменяются скобками, когда x больше или равно l, и нулем, когда x меньше l, эти функции сингулярности могут быть дифференцированы или интегрированы, как обычные математические выражения.
Функции сингулярности построены на графике для визуального представления. Большинство нагрузок на балку можно разбить на основные нагрузки, а функции для поперечной силы можно получить, сложив соответствующие функции для каждой нагрузки.

Например, при работе с точечной нагрузкой, приложенной в определенную точку балки, функции сингулярности позволяют прямо представить резкое изменение поперечной силы в этом месте. Разбив сложную нагрузку на балку на более простые компоненты, можно легко определить общую поперечную силу балки, объединив функции, связанные с каждым типом нагрузки.
