Для определения изгибающего момента в балках с помощью функций сингулярности строится диаграмма свободного тела балки путем замены распределенной нагрузки на эквивалентную сосредоточенную.
Затем моменты суммируются относительно правой опоры, чтобы получить уравнение общего момента для определения величины силы реакции.
Далее балка разрезается в точке между левой опорой и средней точкой. Из диаграммы свободного тела изгибающий момент выражается определенной функцией с учетом интервала.
Теперь балка разрезается в точке между средней точкой и правой опорой. Строится диаграмма свободного тела этого участка, заменяющая распределенную нагрузку эквивалентной сосредоточенной нагрузкой, а изгибающий момент выражается другой функцией с учетом интервала.
Эти две функции объединены в одно выражение, представляющее изгибающий момент в любой точке луча. Выражение в угловых скобках для различных условий называется функцией сингулярности.

Функции сингулярности упрощают представление изгибающих моментов в балках, подвергающихся прерывистой нагрузке, позволяя использовать одно математическое выражение. Для опирающейся балки AB с нагрузкой, равномерно распределенной от ее средней точки M до правого конца, этот подход включает концептуальные «разрезы» в определенных точках для определения изгибающего момента в каждом сегменте. При разрезании балки в точке между A и M изгибающий момент сегмента до достижения средней точки M представляется с помощью определенной функции. 

Другой разрез в точке между точками M и B позволяет описывать изгибающий момент на участке от середины M до конца балки другой функцией. Ключом к упрощению представления является объединение этих функций в одно выражение, которое адаптируется в зависимости от положения точки разреза вдоль балки.

где w0 — распределенная нагрузка, приложенная по длине, от M до конца балки. Выражение формируется путем включения второй функции в расчеты только для позиций за пределами средней точки M, фактически используя условный подход для управления разрывом. Кроме того, распределение нагрузки вдоль балки и возникающая в результате сила сдвига также могут быть изображены с помощью функций сингулярности. Этот метод, часто использующий для представления скобки Маколея, упрощает расчет изгибающих моментов в балках с различными условиями нагрузки.

Singularity functions help model beam loads and bending moments when the loading changes along the beam. They make it possible to write the bending moment with one mathematical expression instead of separate equations for each section. In this method, Macaulay’s brackets are often used to show where a load starts or stops.

For a simply supported beam AB, the load is uniform from the midpoint M to the right support B. To find the bending moment, the beam is cut at different points. A cut between A and M gives the moment expression for the left segment before the midpoint. Another cut between M and B gives the moment expression for the right segment after the load begins.

These segment equations are then combined into a single form that changes with position along the beam. The second term is included only for points beyond midpoint M, so the formula handles the discontinuity in the load. The distributed load is written as w0 over the length from M to B, and the same singularity function idea can also be used to show the load pattern and the shear force.
