Здесь отношение осевой силы к площади является напряжением, а отношение удлинения к первоначальной длине стержня — это создаваемая деформация.
В упругой области плотность энергии деформации может быть выражена в терминах модуля упругости.
Кривая напряжения-деформации демонстрирует линейную зависимость в упругой области, подразумевая, что плотность энергии деформации подчиняется закону Гука. Здесь, после снятия напряжения, деформация становится нулевой. Эта область плотности энергии называется модулем упругости.
В пластической области некоторое постоянное напряжение сохраняется даже после снятия напряжения. Таким образом, восстанавливается только часть плотности энергии деформации, а оставшаяся плотность энергии расходуется на деформацию объекта в виде тепла. 
Общая площадь под кривой называется модулем ударной вязкости и представляет собой общую плотность энергии, необходимую для разрыва стержня.

Понимание плотности энергии деформации в материалах при осевой нагрузке, имеет решающее значение для оценки их механического поведения и долговечности. Когда стержень подвергается такой нагрузке, он удлиняется и сохраняет энергию, известную как энергия деформации, в виде потенциальной энергии внутри материала. Эта энергия измеряется в единицах энергии на единицу объема.


В упругой области материала зависимость между напряжением и деформацией линейна и подчиняется закону Гука. Плотность энергии деформации в этой области рассчитывается по площади под кривой напряжение-деформация до предела упругости. Эта накопленная энергия подлежит восстановлению и называется модулем упругости, который показывает, сколько энергии материал может поглотить и при этом вернуться к своей первоначальной форме после разгрузки.


За пределом упругости материал ведет себя пластично, постоянно деформируясь. В этой пластической области при разгрузке можно восстановить только часть запасенной энергии; остальное теряется в виде тепла или используется при остаточной деформации. Полная энергия, которую материал может поглотить до разрушения, измеряется модулем ударной вязкости.

Energy stored in a rod under axial load helps show how a material will respond to stretching and breaking. When the rod elongates, it stores strain energy as potential energy inside the material. Strain energy density is the amount of that energy per unit volume.

In the elastic region, stress and strain have a linear relationship that follows Hooke's Law. The strain energy density in this region is found from the area under the stress-strain curve up to the elastic limit. This recoverable energy is called the modulus of resilience. It shows how much energy a material can absorb and still return to its original shape when the load is removed.

After the elastic limit, the material enters the plastic region. In this stage, the material deforms permanently, so only part of the stored energy comes back during unloading. The rest is lost as heat or used in permanent deformation. The total energy a material can absorb before rupture is called the modulus of toughness. This value is important when choosing materials for impact resistance and ductility, and for designing structures that must handle mechanical loads.
