logarithms in sound and decibels

Logarithms help describe sound intensity with the decibel scale. They are useful when a quantity changes over a very wide range. In acoustics, the decibel (dB) scale turns sound levels into numbers that are easier to compare and use.

Sound can range from a faint whisper to the roar of a jet engine. A linear scale would make those differences hard to manage. The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale, which means it measures sound intensity level relative to a reference value. For air, that reference intensity is typically 10^−12 W/m².

The sound intensity level, or SIL, is calculated with a logarithmic equation that uses the sound intensity I and the reference intensity I0. This formula compresses large sound ranges into smaller, practical values. Because of that, it is easier to read, compare, and interpret sound data.

The scale also shows relative change clearly. Every 10 dB increase means the sound intensity is ten times greater. For example, an 80 dB sound is ten times more intense than a 70 dB sound. This kind of comparison matters in environmental noise monitoring, audio engineering, and hearing studies, where changes in intensity are often more useful than exact raw values.
