Elastic Potential Energy

Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in a flexible object due to deformation caused by an external force. For example, when a bow is stretched, elastic potential energy is stored in the bow.
Mathematically, it is defined as the product of force required to deform the object and displacement caused by the force. Thus, using Hooke&#8217;s law, the elastic potential energy of a bow stretched by a distance x can be expressed as 1/2 kx squared, where k is the spring constant.
Lastly, consider a case where a body hangs from one end of a spring, which is fixed at the other end, as shown. The body exhibits both gravitational and elastic potential energy. Here, the total potential energy, U, is the sum of gravitational and elastic potential energy.

Elastic potential energy is the energy stored as a result of the deformation of an elastic object, such as the stretching of a spring. An object is elastic if it returns to its original shape and size after being deformed.&#160;
Potential energy is also associated with the elastic force exerted by an ideal spring. The work done by this force can be represented as a change in the elastic potential energy of the spring. Thus, the work done by a perfectly elastic spring, in one dimension, depends only on the spring constant and the squares of the displacements from the unstretched position. This work only involves the properties of a Hooke&#8217;s law interaction, in which a restoring force is proportional to and in the opposite direction of the imposed displacement, and not the properties of real springs and whatever objects are attached to them. Therefore, the difference in elastic potential energy for a spring force can be defined as the negative of the work done by the spring force.
A simple system embodying both gravitational and elastic potential energy is a one-dimensional, vertical mass-spring system. This consists of a massive particle (or block) hung from one end of a perfectly elastic, massless spring, the other end of which is fixed.

Elastic potential energy is stored when an elastic object is deformed, such as when a spring is stretched. An object is elastic if it returns to its original shape and size after the force is removed. This stored energy is part of a system’s potential energy.

An ideal spring also exerts an elastic force. The work done by this force can be described as a change in the spring’s elastic potential energy. For a perfectly elastic spring in one dimension, that work depends only on the spring constant and the square of the displacement from the unstretched position.

This relationship follows Hooke’s law, where the restoring force is proportional to the displacement and points in the opposite direction. It describes the spring interaction itself, not the properties of a real spring or the objects attached to it. The change in elastic potential energy is defined as the negative of the work done by the spring force.

A simple example that combines gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy is a one-dimensional vertical mass-spring system. In this setup, a block or other massive particle hangs from one end of a perfectly elastic, massless spring, while the other end is fixed. This model helps show how both types of potential energy can act in the same system.
