Conjugated &#960; systems absorb in the UV&#8211;visible region where the wavelength of maximum absorbance, &#955;max, increases with the extent of conjugation.
Woodward and Fieser devised a set of rules to predict &#955;max based on the structure of conjugated systems.
Accordingly, &#955;max is expressed as the sum of a base value and substituent contributions.
The base value is a fixed absorption value specific for acyclic, homoannular, and heteroannular dienes.
Substituent effects include contributions from extended conjugated double bonds, exocyclic double bonds, ring residues, and various substituents directly connected to the &#960; system.
Let&#39;s work out an example.
Label the rings as A, B, and C. Since the two double bonds are part of the same ring, this is a homoannular diene with a base value of 253 nm.
There are three ring residues, each contributing 5 nm.
Additionally, there is one exocyclic double bond relative to ring B and an alkyl group directly attached to the &#960; system. Both contribute 5 nm.
So, the calculated value of &#955;max is 278 nm, close to the observed value of 275 nm.

Woodward-Fieser rules help predict UV-Vis absorption peaks for conjugated molecules. In UV-Visible spectroscopy, the light-absorbing part of a molecule is the chromophore. Groups attached directly to the chromophore are called auxochromes.

Conjugated pi systems absorb light through the lowest-energy pi to pi star transition. Their absorption maximum, or lambda max, often changes with structure. The Woodward-Fieser rules estimate lambda max by starting with a base wavelength for a diene or triene class and then adding values for different substituents.

For dienes, the base value is 214 nm for acyclic and homoannular dienes and 253 nm for heteroannular dienes. The added contributions can include 30 nm for extended conjugation, 5 nm for a ring residue, and 5 nm for an exocyclic double bond. Substituent groups also add fixed values, such as 5 nm for an alkyl group, 6 nm for an OR group, 5 nm for Cl or Br, and 60 nm for NR2.

The method also extends to alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. For acyclic or six-membered cyclic enones, the base value is 215 nm, while five-membered cyclic enones use 202 nm. Added terms include 30 nm for extended conjugation, 5 nm for an exocyclic double bond, and ring residue values of 10 nm at alpha and 12 nm at beta.

Substituent values for enones depend on position. Alkyl groups add 10 nm at alpha and 12 nm at beta. OCH3 adds 35 nm at alpha and 30 nm at beta. Cl adds 15 nm at alpha and 12 nm at beta, while Br adds 25 nm at alpha and 30 nm at beta. NR2 adds 95 nm at beta.

Example calculations show how close the predicted and observed values can be. For one heteroannular diene, the calculated lambda max is 240 nm and the observed value is 241 nm. For one acyclic enone, the calculated and observed lambda max are both 249 nm.
