Face nailing, end nailing, and toe nailing are three techniques used for fastening wood members with nails.
Screws, which are fasteners with spiral threads come in a variety of types, and are installed by applying a twisting motion to embed them into the wood securely.
This action causes the threads to pull the screw firmly into the material it is fastening.
Bolts are placed into predrilled holes using a wrench to turn the nut on the side opposite to the bolt head, and the bolt is tightened and secured in place.
Flat steel washers under the bolt head and nut distribute force over a larger wood area, reducing fiber crushing.
Split-ring connectors, toothed plates, and metal framing devices are also used in wood member connections to serve the purpose of fastening.

Wood fasteners connect parts of a wood structure and help keep members in place. The strength of the connection depends mainly on direct bearing between the wood members. Different fasteners are chosen for different jobs and structural needs.

Nails are the most common wood fasteners. They are sharp-pointed metal pins that are driven into wood with a hammer or a mechanical nail gun. Nails come in many diameters, head styles, and lengths.

Nailing methods also matter. Face nailing places the nail through the face of one member. End nailing drives the nail into the end of a board, and toe nailing places it at an angle for a stronger connection between members.

Screws use spiral threads to hold firmly in wood. A screw is twisted into place, and that turning motion pulls it deeper into the wood. Different screw types are made for different uses.
