Auscultation is a clinical exam method that lets a provider listen to sounds inside the body. Doctors use it to gather important diagnostic information from the chest, heart, abdomen, and blood vessels.

For many years, auscultation meant immediate auscultation. In that method, the examiner placed an ear directly on the patient's skin. This approach was used for centuries, but it became less useful in nineteenth-century France because of social norms and poor diagnostic yield.

René Laënnec changed this practice in 1816 by inventing the first stethoscope. His early device was a hollow wooden tube. Over time, the stethoscope was improved into the modern tool used in clinical practice today. It also became a symbol of honor and trustworthiness for patients who see clinicians carrying it.

The modern stethoscope has a chest piece with two sides: the diaphragm and the bell. The diaphragm is used when pressed firmly against the skin. It transmits high-frequency sounds by letting vibrations move through the diaphragm membrane, the air column inside the stethoscope, and into the ears.

The bell works differently. When it is applied lightly, it transmits low-frequency sounds. It acts like a cup that carries sound through the tubing. If the bell is pressed more firmly, it stretches the skin underneath and acts more like a diaphragm.
