Fonksiyonel gruplar, bir molekülün özelliklerini etkileyen kovalent bağlı atom setleridir. Fonksiyonel grupların adlandırılması, organik kimya ve biyokimyada yararlı olan bir moleküldeki atomların hızlı bir şekilde tanımlanmasını sağlar.Hidrokarbonlar organik moleküllerin temelidir ve değişen sayıda karbon ve hidrojen atomu içerir. Bunlara alkanlar, alkenler ve alkinler dahildir. Alkanlardaki karbon atomları tekli bağlarla birbirine bağlanırken alkenler ve alkinler sırasıyla çift veya üçlü bağlar içerir.Hidrokarbonlar kapalı halkalar oluşturabilir. Halka yalnızca tek bağlar içeriyorsa, buna sikloalkan denir. Karbonlar, tek ve çift bağlar dönüşümlü olarak birbirine bağlanırsa, buna aromatik halka veya aril grubu denir.Karbon içermeyen en basit gruplardan biri, bir oksijen atomu ve bir hidrojen atomu içeren hidroksil grubudur. Metanol, su ve karbonhidratlar gibi birkaç bileşiğin önemli bir bileşenidir.  Hidrokarbonlar 
 Karbon atomları arasındaki güçlü ve kararlı bağlar, zincirleri, dalları ve halkaları içeren karmaşık moleküller üretir. Bu bileşiklerin kimyasına organik kimya denir. Hidrokarbonlar sadece karbon ve hidrojenden oluşan organik bileşiklerdir. Alkanlar doymuş hidrokarbonlardır-yani sadece tek bağlar içeren hidrokarbonlardır. Alkenler bir veya daha fazla karbon-karbon çift bağı içerirler. Alkinler bir veya daha fazla karbon-karbon üçlü bağı içerirler. Aromatik hidrokarbonlar halka yapıları içerirler. Aril grupları olarak da bilinirler.
 
 Alkoller ve Eterler 
 Hidrokarbon olmayan birçok organik bileşik, hidrokarbon türevleri olarak düşünülebilir. Bir hidrokarbon türevi, bir hidrokarbonun bir veya daha fazla hidrojen atomunun, karbon veya hidrojen dışındaki bir elementin en az bir atomunu içeren fonksiyonel bir grupla değiştirilmesiyle oluşturulabilir. Hidrokarbon türevlerinin özellikleri büyük ölçüde fonksiyonel grup tarafından belirlenir.  Aldehitler, Ketonlar, Karboksilik Asitler ve Esterler 
 Karbonil grubu ile ilgili fonksiyonel gruplar arasında bir aldehitin &#8211CHO grubu, bir ketonun &#8211COO grubu, bir karboksilik asidin&#8211 COOH grubu ve bir esterin &#8211COOR grubu bulunur. Bir karbon&#8211oksijen çift bağı olan karbonil grubu, bu organik molekül sınıflarındaki anahtar yapıdır: Aldehitler, karbonil karbon atomuna bağlı en az bir hidrojen atomu içerirler.
