Characteristics of Practical Op Amps

Practical op amps are used to separate useful signals from unwanted noise. A difference amplifier should ideally amplify only the difference between two input signals. In real circuits, though, the output depends on both differential gain and common-mode gain.

The common-mode rejection ratio, or CMRR, measures how well an op amp rejects common-mode signals. Common-mode signals are the same on both inputs. A higher CMRR helps an op amp ignore noise and amplify the wanted signal, such as music in an audio system.

Another key op-amp feature is the gain-bandwidth product. It is the product of the open-loop voltage gain and the frequency at which that gain is measured. For a given op amp, this value stays constant and helps compare one op amp with another.

A unity gain buffer, also called a voltage follower, is another useful op-amp setup. It gives a voltage gain of one, so the output matches the input. It also has low output impedance and high input impedance, which makes it useful for signal isolation and impedance matching.

In an audio system, a voltage follower can stop a low-impedance speaker from effectively shorting the signal from a high-impedance source to ground. By matching impedance levels, it helps transfer maximum power from the source to the speaker without distortion or loss. These op-amp traits are important in many audio and communication systems.
