Bending of Members Made of Several Materials

Composite beam stress depends on the elastic properties of each material in the member. When a structural member is made of two materials with the same cross-sectional area, each material responds differently under load because its modulus of elasticity is different. To analyze this behavior, engineers use the transformed section concept, which compares the two materials in a single equivalent section.

Hooke’s Law links stress and strain in each material. Stress is proportional to strain, but the amount of stress is not the same in both materials because each one has its own modulus of elasticity. The normal strain also changes linearly with distance from the neutral axis, so the stress pattern changes across the member as well.

The different stress distributions create different forces in each material segment. To simplify the force and moment calculations, the force in one material can be related to the force in the other by using the ratio of their elastic moduli. This ratio converts one material into an equivalent section of the other and shows how much each material contributes to the bending response.

The elastic moduli ratio also changes the shape of the transformed section. If the ratio is greater than one, the material with the higher modulus appears wider, which reflects greater stiffness. If the ratio is less than one, that material appears narrower, which reflects lower stiffness. This transformation is important for finding the neutral axis position and the moment of inertia, both of which are needed to determine bending stresses and deflections in composite beams and help ensure structural integrity under load.
