Definition of z-Transform

z-transform for discrete-time signals

The z-transform is a key math tool for analyzing discrete-time signals and systems. It is the discrete-time counterpart of the Laplace transform used for continuous-time systems. In signal and systems analysis, it works alongside the discrete-time Fourier transform.

The z-transform changes a discrete-time signal into a power series with a complex variable, z. Each term in the series represents one sampling instant of the signal. This form makes it easier to study the signal in detail and solve problems in algebraic form.

The z-transform also helps turn difference equations into algebraic equations. This is similar to how the Laplace transform turns differential equations into algebraic equations. That simplification is useful in digital signal processing and control system work.

A z-transform is valid only within its Region of Convergence, or ROC. The ROC is the range where the series actually converges. Understanding the ROC is important for describing system behavior and stability.

The variable z is a complex number, so both its magnitude and phase matter. The unit circle in the z-plane is especially important because its magnitude is one. When poles of the z-transform lie inside the unit circle, the system is considered stable.
