Testes: Histology

The tunica albuginea of each testis extends inward to form fibrous partitions, or septa testis, dividing it into internal compartments called lobules.
Each lobule has 1 to 3 tightly coiled seminiferous tubules, which are the site for sperm production.
These tubules merge into a tubular network at the back of the testis, known as the rete testis. It connects to 15 to 20 efferent ductules, leading to the epididymis.
Within the seminiferous tubules, the spermatogenic cells are embedded within the seminiferous epithelium, interspersed with sustentacular cells, also known as Sertoli cells.
Spermatogenic cells, supported and nourished by Sertoli cells, differentiate into mature spermatozoa as they progress toward the luminal end.
Between the adjacent seminiferous tubules are interstitial cells, also known as Leydig cells.
These cells produce androgens, including testosterone.
The long testicular arteries, delivering oxygenated blood, are surrounded by a network of interconnected veins, the pampiniform plexus.
The pampiniform plexus drains deoxygenated blood and absorbs heat from the oxygenated blood, ensuring optimal nourishment and temperature regulation of the testicular tissue.

Each lobule has 1 to 3 tightly coiled seminiferous tubules where sperm production occurs. These tubules merge into a tubular network at the back of the testis, known as the rete testis. It connects to 15 to 20 efferent ductules, leading to the epididymis.
The spermatogenic cells, responsible for producing sperm, are arranged in layers along the walls of the seminiferous tubules. They differentiate with support and nourishment from Sertoli cells to form mature sperm towards the lumenal end. Between the adjacent seminiferous tubules are interstitial cells, also known as Leydig cells. These cells are essential in producing androgens, including testosterone, the primary male sex hormone.
The testicles receive oxygenated blood through long testicular arteries. A network of veins, called the pampiniform plexus, surrounds these arteries. These veins are responsible for draining the deoxygenated blood from the testicles and absorbing heat from the incoming arterial blood. This process ensures that the testicular tissue is optimally nourished and maintained at the correct temperature for healthy sperm production. Deviation from the optimal temperature range can disturb the delicate process of sperm production, leading to a decrease in fertility. As a result, it is crucial to maintain the correct temperature for the testes to function correctly.

The testes are built for sperm production and hormone release. A tough fibrous layer called the tunica albuginea covers each testis. It also sends septa, or fibrous partitions, inward to divide the tissue into lobules.

Each lobule contains 1 to 3 tightly coiled seminiferous tubules, where sperm are made. These tubules join into a network at the back of the testis called the rete testis. From there, the pathway continues through 15 to 20 efferent ductules to the epididymis.

Cells along the walls of the seminiferous tubules form layers of spermatogenic cells, which develop into sperm. Sertoli cells support and nourish these cells as they mature toward the lumenal end of the tubules. Between nearby tubules are interstitial cells, also called Leydig cells, which produce androgens such as testosterone, the main male sex hormone.

The testes also need a steady blood supply and the right temperature. Long testicular arteries bring in oxygenated blood. Around them is the pampiniform plexus, a network of veins that drains deoxygenated blood and absorbs heat from the incoming arterial blood. This heat exchange helps keep testicular tissue at the correct temperature for healthy sperm production, and temperature changes outside that range can reduce fertility.

Reproductive System

Content elaboration: The reproductive system is comprised of internal and external organs and hormones. The ovaries and testes produce gametes that fuse to form a zygote, a single cell that develops into an embryo and eventually an adult. A comparison of male and female anatomy should be explored. The female body has the function of providing protection and nourishment for the developing fetus until birth. If all is successful, a new generation of offspring will occur. The processes of the reproductive system include oogenesis, spermatogenesis and fertilization. Additional processes can include lactation and menstruation. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, infertility, chromosomal disorders, endometriosis, cancer, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and sexually transmitted diseases (STD's). Investigations are used to understand and explain the reproductive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications. Note: At this level, a detailed description of embryological development is not required. The focus is on the structure and function of the reproductive organs.
