Concrete air content testing helps show how much air is trapped in fresh concrete. This matters because air content affects structural integrity and durability. The volumetric method, ASTM C173, is better for lightweight concrete and mixes with highly absorptive aggregates. It measures air content by tracking the volume change in a concrete-alcohol mixture. The gravimetric method is different because it uses specific gravity to calculate air content. It is useful for precise scientific analysis, but it is used less often in field work.

The Chace Indicator offers a faster, approximate check. It uses a syringe-like device to estimate air volume changes in concrete. The best method depends on the concrete type, the project needs, and the tools available. Following ASTM procedures closely helps keep the results accurate and consistent.
