Indeterminate forms appear when a limit gives an expression that cannot be read directly. Common examples are 0 divided by 0 and infinity divided by infinity. These results do not show the true behavior of the function near the point of interest, so more analysis is needed.

L’Hôpital’s Rule is a useful method for handling these ambiguous limits. It applies when two differentiable functions approach 0 or infinity at the same time near the point being studied. Instead of finding the limit of the original ratio, the rule lets you find the limit of the ratio of the derivatives. If the limit on the right-hand side exists, this step can reveal the actual limit value.

The rule works for both the 0/0 and infinity/infinity indeterminate forms. In some problems, one use of L’Hôpital’s Rule is not enough. If the result is still indeterminate, the rule can be applied again. This continues until a determinate limit is found or until it becomes clear that the limit does not exist.

A key condition is that the functions must remain differentiable, and the derivative of the denominator must not vanish near the point of interest. Indeterminate forms also appear in applied science, not just in math exercises. For example, in bacterial population studies, the average growth rate over a short time interval becomes indeterminate as both the population change and the time interval approach zero. L’Hôpital’s Rule turns that average rate into a derivative and shows the instantaneous growth rate.
