Properties of Continuous Functions

Continuous functions stay smooth when they are added, subtracted, multiplied by a constant, or multiplied together. If f and g are continuous at a point a, then f+g, f-g, cf, and fg are also continuous at a. This makes it possible to build more complex functions from simpler continuous parts without breaking continuity.

Polynomials are continuous for every real number. A polynomial is an expression made from sums of powers of x with constant coefficients. So polynomial graphs are continuous from negative infinity to positive infinity.

Rational functions are ratios of two polynomials. They are continuous wherever the denominator is not zero. Standard functions such as sin x, cos x, e^x, ln x, and inverse trigonometric functions are also continuous on the domains where they are defined. For example, ln x is continuous on (0, ∞), while sin x and cos x are continuous for all real x.

Continuity also carries through composition. If g is continuous at a and f is continuous at g(a), then the composite function f(g(x)) is continuous at a. This rule shows that nested functions keep continuity when each part is continuous at the right point.
