
All living things on Earth are classified into three main domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.
Bacteria are single-celled organisms without a nucleus, known as prokaryotes. Their cell walls contain peptidoglycan, which gives them structure and protection. Bacteria are found almost everywhere—soil, air, and even inside your body!
Archaea are also prokaryotes, but their cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan. Instead, they have unique membranes that help them survive in extreme environments like hot springs and salty lakes.
Eukarya includes organisms with cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts. This domain is divided into four kingdoms: Plantae, Fungi, Animalia, and Protista.
Among the four kingdoms, plants and fungi have rigid cell walls made of cellulose and chitin.
Protists are diverse—some have cell walls while others do not. Common examples include amoeba and plasmodium.
Animals are unique because they completely lack a cell wall. Instead, they have a semi-permeable plasma membrane around the cells and typically have complex tissues and organs.
