Question 1

What are the main components of a Bunsen burner and what do they do?

Accepted Answer

A Bunsen burner has five key components: the barrel (burner tube) where air and gas mix, the collar at the barrel's base that controls air intake, the needle valve that regulates gas flow, the base that provides stability and remains cool, and the gas inlet that connects to the gas jet. Each component works together to control flame intensity and temperature.

Question 2

How does the Venturi Effect help a Bunsen burner draw in air?

Accepted Answer

When the collar opens, gas flowing through the burner tube creates a reduction in air pressure inside the barrel. This pressure drop pulls air into the barrel through the air vent openings in the collar, a phenomenon called the Venturi Effect. This controlled air intake is essential for mixing gas and air to produce the flame.

Question 3

What is the difference between a safety flame and a blue flame on a Bunsen burner?

Accepted Answer

The safety flame appears when the collar is fully closed, producing a brighter, dirty, less intense flame that is cooler and used to indicate the burner is on. The blue flame appears as the collar opens, with an outer blue flame that is hotter and quieter, and an inner blue flame that burns hottest at the tip and produces a roaring sound due to complete combustion.

Question 4

How can a Bunsen burner flame create a sterile work area?

Accepted Answer

Briefly flaming the neck of a container creates a convection current that lifts airborne particles away from the opening, preventing contamination. The heat from the Bunsen burner flame also lifts particulates in the air away from the experimental area, helping maintain a sterile field around your work and reducing the risk of airborne contamination during procedures.

Question 5

What are common laboratory applications for sterilizing equipment with a Bunsen burner?

Accepted Answer

Metal instruments like spatulas, inoculation loops, scissors, and forceps are frequently sterilized between uses by flaming. Glass instruments such as serological pipettes and pipettors are briefly flame-sterilized before and between each use. Glass slides for microscopy are also passed through the flame to remove dust particles before samples are mounted.

Question 6

What safety precautions should you take before lighting a Bunsen burner?

Accepted Answer

Secure any loose hair, clothing, or accessories before lighting. Place the burner at least 12 inches in front of overhead shelving or equipment. Use a heatproof mat under the burner to protect the bench top and catch stray sparks. Keep safety equipment like fire extinguishers and safety blankets close at hand before igniting the flame.

Question 7

How can you use a Bunsen burner to modify glass and metal tools?

Accepted Answer

A Bunsen burner flame can heat glass and metal tools to modify their shape or properties. For example, thin glass rods can be carefully heated and bent while hot to create bacterial culture spreaders. The flame can also be used for pulling pipettes, bending pipettes, polishing glass capillary tubes, making glass dissection needles, and sealing wire picks into glass pipettes.
