Question 1

What is a maximin strategy and why do players use it?

Accepted Answer

A maximin strategy minimizes potential losses by choosing the option that maximizes the minimum payoff a player can receive, regardless of opponent actions. Players use it to provide a safety net against uncertainty and unpredictable opponent behavior, ensuring a safer but moderate profit rather than risking devastating losses.

Question 2

How do you identify the maximin strategy in a decision scenario?

Accepted Answer

To identify the maximin strategy, review all available options and determine the worst-case outcome for each. The option providing the highest payoff among these worst-case scenarios is the maximin strategy. This approach minimizes exposure to significant losses and secures the safest minimum result possible.

Question 3

Why is the maximin strategy important in unpredictable business environments?

Accepted Answer

The maximin strategy is crucial in unpredictable environments because it focuses on mitigating risks and avoiding detrimental losses. When competitors make irrational or unpredictable decisions, a company using maximin can guarantee a stable return by choosing a pricing strategy that avoids devastating price wars while securing safer profits.

Question 4

What does the term 'maximin' mean in game theory?

Accepted Answer

The term 'maximin' derives from its approach: it maximizes the minimum gain. Among all possible strategies, a player chooses the one offering the best worst-case scenario. This means focusing on the most favorable outcome among the least favorable options, ensuring the minimum payoff is as high as possible.

Question 5

How does maximin strategy apply to financial investments and military tactics?

Accepted Answer

In financial investments, maximin strategies minimize risks in volatile markets by securing the best worst-case outcome. In military tactics, commanders use maximin to prepare for worst-case enemy actions while maintaining tactical advantage. Both applications prioritize safeguarding against catastrophic losses over maximizing potential gains.

Question 6

How does maximin strategy differ from other game theory approaches?

Accepted Answer

Unlike strategies that assume rational opponent behavior or seek maximum payoffs, maximin focuses on worst-case protection. It contrasts with approaches in dominant and dominated strategies or nash equilibrium in one period games, which may pursue higher payoffs but accept greater risk exposure in uncertain environments.

Question 7

When should a decision-maker choose maximin over other strategic approaches?

Accepted Answer

Decision-makers should choose maximin when facing significant uncertainty about opponent actions, especially when competitors behave irrationally or unpredictably. It's ideal when avoiding catastrophic losses is more important than maximizing gains, such as in competitive pricing scenarios or high-stakes financial decisions where stability matters more than upside potential.
