Question 1

What was Thomas Malthus's main argument about population and economic growth?

Accepted Answer

Malthus argued that population grows geometrically (1, 2, 4, 8, 16) while food supply grows only arithmetically (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). This mismatch means population eventually outpaces resources, leading to scarcity, declining productivity, and lower living standards. He believed natural checks like famine and disease would eventually restore balance by reducing population to subsistence levels.

Question 2

How does the law of diminishing returns apply to Malthus's theory?

Accepted Answer

As population increases and land becomes scarce, each additional farmer produces less output than the previous one. This law of diminishing returns means productivity per person declines as more workers share the same fixed land. Over time, this reduces real wages and pushes living standards downward, trapping the economy in poverty.

Question 3

What is the Malthusian trap and why does it repeat?

Accepted Answer

The Malthusian trap is a cycle where temporary economic progress leads to population growth, which then exhausts resources and reduces living standards back to subsistence levels. Even improvements like better harvests or higher wages trigger more births, stretching resources thin again. This repeating pattern makes it difficult to escape poverty when population growth outpaces the food supply.

Question 4

What natural checks did Malthus believe would control population growth?

Accepted Answer

Malthus identified famine, disease, and death as natural checks that would reduce population when resources became too scarce. These pressures were not choices but inevitable consequences of overpopulation. When population exceeded the food supply, these hardships would restore balance by bringing population back to levels the food supply could sustain.

Question 5

How do real wages change in the Malthusian model?

Accepted Answer

In Malthus's framework, real wages start relatively high when land is plentiful and population is small. As population grows and land becomes scarce, productivity per worker falls due to diminishing returns. Wages decline until they reach subsistence levels, barely enough for survival. Any temporary wage increases trigger population growth, which then pushes wages back down.

Question 6

Why did Malthus view economic progress as temporary?

Accepted Answer

Malthus believed progress was temporary because population growth would always eventually outpace improvements in food production. Any advancement in living standards or harvests would encourage larger families, increasing population pressure. This demographic response would exhaust resources again, canceling out gains and returning the economy to subsistence-level poverty.

Question 7

How does Malthus's pessimistic view contrast with other growth theories?

Accepted Answer

Malthus predicted economies would stagnate at subsistence levels due to population-resource imbalances. Later theories like the neoclassical growth model technological advancement offered different mechanisms for sustained growth through capital accumulation and innovation, moving beyond Malthus's resource-constraint pessimism and enabling long-term prosperity.
