xps surface analysis of materials

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or XPS, is a surface analysis method for studying materials. It measures elemental composition, empirical formula, chemical state, and electronic state of the elements in a sample. Because the signal comes from the top few nanometers, XPS is especially useful for examining surfaces.

To collect an XPS spectrum, a material is irradiated with an X-ray beam. At the same time, the instrument measures the kinetic energy and number of electrons that escape from the surface. For typical electron energies, the detected electrons come from about the top 10 nm of the material.

XPS is based on the photoelectric effect, the same physical principle that helped explain how light can release electrons from matter. That link to the photoelectric effect led to important scientific recognition. Albert Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the effect in 1905.

The technique was once called electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, or ESCA. Kai Siegbahn built on early work by Innes, Moseley, Rawlinson, and Robinson and developed ESCA into a powerful analytical tool. In 1954, he recorded the first high-energy-resolution XPS spectrum of NaCl.

Continued progress in ESCA and XPS led to improved instruments and broader use in chemical analysis. The first commercial monochromatic XPS instrument appeared in 1969. Siegbahn later received the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work developing the technique.
