Predicting Ion Charges on the Periodic Table

Ion charges can often be predicted from an element’s position on the periodic table. In chemical reactions, the nucleus stays unchanged, but electrons may be transferred, lost, or shared. When atoms gain or lose electrons during compound formation, they become ions, which are electrically charged particles.
