The Periodic Table

The periodic table of elements is an important reference in chemistry for organizing the elements. The table has seven rows, or periods, numbered top to bottom, and eighteen columns called groups or families.

While the modern numbering system recommended by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry or IUPAC, numbers the groups from 1 to 18, the Chemical Abstracts Services uses roman numerals and letters to designate the groups. Here, the main group elements are designated with letter A and the transition elements are designated with letter B. 

The elements in a periodic table are ordered from left to right and top to bottom by increasing atomic number. Those with similar properties fall in the same group. 

Some of the groups have common names. The elements in group 1, except for hydrogen, are known as alkali metals and the elements in group 2 as alkaline earth metals. All of these metals are very reactive and are found in nature combined with other elements.

Highly reactive, nonmetallic elements in group 17 are known as halogens. The nonreactive, nonmetallic elements of group 18 are referred to as noble or inert gases. 

The elements can be divided into three broad classes: metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. 

Metals are grouped toward the left and middle of the periodic table and are the vast majority of the elements. They are good conductors of electricity and heat. All are solid at room temperature, except for mercury, which is liquid. 

Metals are shiny, and they can be hammered into sheets and drawn into wires. Metals, like potassium, tend to lose electrons to form cations, positively charged ions, when they react with other elements. 

Nonmetals are grouped on the right side of the periodic table and usually poor conductors of heat and electricity. At room temperature, some are solid, while others are liquids or gases. Nonmetals tend to gain electrons and form anions, negatively charged ions, when they react with other elements.

Metalloids are elements that are found along the divide between the metals and non-metals. They are the smallest class of elements and exhibit mixed properties. 

All metalloids exist as solids at room temperature. Some of them, for example, silicon and germanium, act as semiconductors, meaning that unlike metals, they get better at conducting electricity as the temperature increases.

Elements in the periodic table are also divided into three categories according to their location: the main-group elements, the transition metals, and the inner transition metals also known as the lanthanides and the actinides for the first element in the series in each row.

As early chemists discovered more elements, they realized that various elements could be grouped by their similar chemical behaviors. One such grouping includes lithium (Li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). All of these elements are shiny, conduct heat and electricity well, and have similar chemical properties. A second grouping includes calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), and barium (Ba), which also are shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, and have chemical properties in common. However, the specific properties of these two groupings are notably different from each other. For example, Li, Na, and K are much more reactive than Ca, Sr, and Ba. Additionally, Li, Na, and K form compounds with oxygen in a ratio of two of their atoms to one oxygen atom, whereas Ca, Sr, and Ba form compounds with one of their atoms to one oxygen atom. Fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I) also exhibit similar properties to each other, but these properties are drastically different from those of any of the elements above.

Dimitri Mendeleev in Russia (1869) and Lothar Meyer in Germany (1870) independently recognized a periodic relationship among the properties of the elements known at that time. Both published tables with the elements arranged according to increasing atomic mass. However, Mendeleev went one step further than Meyer; he used his table to predict the existence of elements that would have properties similar to aluminum and silicon but were not yet known. The discoveries of gallium (1875) and germanium (1886) provided significant support for Mendeleev&#8217;s work. Although Mendeleev and Meyer had a long dispute over priority, Mendeleev&#8217;s contributions to the development of the periodic table are now more widely recognized.

By the twentieth century, it became apparent that the periodic relationship involved atomic numbers rather than atomic masses. The modern statement of this relationship, the periodic law, states the following: the properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers. A modern periodic table arranges the elements in increasing order of their atomic numbers, and it groups atoms with similar properties in the same vertical column. Each box represents an element and contains its atomic number, symbol, average atomic mass, and (sometimes) name. 

The elements are arranged in seven horizontal rows, called periods or series, and 18 vertical columns, called groups. Groups are labeled at the top of each column. For the table to fit on a single page, parts of two of the rows, a total of 14 columns, are usually written below the main body of the table.

Many elements differ significantly in their chemical and physical properties, but some elements are similar in their behaviors. For example, many elements appear shiny, are malleable and ductile, and conduct heat and electricity well. Other elements are not shiny, malleable, or ductile, and are poor conductors of heat and electricity. The elements can be sorted into large classes with common properties: metals (elements that are shiny, malleable, good conductors of heat and electricity &#8212; shaded yellow); nonmetals (elements that appear dull, poor conductors of heat and electricity &#8212; shaded red); and metalloids (elements that conduct heat and electricity moderately well, and possess some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetals &#8212; shaded purple).

The elements can also be classified into the main-group elements (or representative elements) in the columns labeled 1, 2, and 13&#8211;18; the transition metals in the columns labeled 3&#8211;12; and inner transition metals in the two rows at the bottom of the table. The top-row elements at the bottom of the table are lanthanides, and the bottom-row elements are actinides. The elements can be subdivided further by more specific properties, such as the composition of the compounds they form. For example, the elements in group 1 (the first column) form compounds that consist of one atom of the element and one atom of hydrogen. These elements (except hydrogen) are known as alkali metals, and they all have similar chemical properties. The elements in group 2 (the second column) form compounds consisting of one atom of the element and two atoms of hydrogen: These are called alkaline earth metals, with similar properties among members of that group. 

Other groups with specific names are the pnictogens (group 15), chalcogens (group 16), halogens (group 17), and the noble gases (group 18, also known as inert gases). The groups can also be referred to by the first element of the group: For example, the chalcogens can be called the oxygen group or oxygen family. Hydrogen is a unique, nonmetallic element with properties similar to both group 1 and group 17 elements. For that reason, hydrogen may be shown at the top of both groups, or by itself.

Element 43 (technetium), element 61 (promethium), and most of the elements with atomic number 84 (polonium) and higher have their atomic mass given in square brackets. This is done for elements that consist entirely of unstable, radioactive isotopes (radioactivity is covered in more detail in the nuclear chemistry chapter). An average atomic weight cannot be determined for these elements because their radioisotopes may vary significantly in relative abundance, depending on the source, or may not even exist in nature. The number in square brackets is the atomic mass number, which is an approximate atomic mass of the most stable isotope of that element.

The periodic table organizes elements by repeating patterns in their properties. Chemists first noticed that some elements behaved alike, so they grouped them by chemical behavior. Lithium, sodium, and potassium are one example. They are shiny and conduct heat and electricity well. Calcium, strontium, and barium form another group with similar physical and chemical properties. Yet these two groups are not the same. The lithium group is much more reactive, and its elements form oxygen compounds in a 2-to-1 atom ratio. The calcium group is less reactive, and its elements form oxygen compounds in a 1-to-1 atom ratio. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine also share similar properties, but those properties are very different from the metal groups above.

Dimitri Mendeleev in Russia and Lothar Meyer in Germany both recognized this repeating pattern in the elements in the 1860s and 1870s. They arranged the known elements by increasing atomic mass. Mendeleev went further by predicting elements that had not yet been discovered. He expected elements with properties similar to aluminum and silicon. Later, gallium and germanium were discovered, and they supported his work. Mendeleev and Meyer later disputed who deserved priority, but Mendeleev is now more widely recognized for helping develop the periodic table.

By the twentieth century, scientists saw that the pattern depends on atomic number, not atomic mass. The periodic law says that the properties of the elements change in a repeating way as atomic number increases. A modern periodic table follows this rule. It places elements in order of increasing atomic number and groups elements with similar properties in the same vertical column.

Each box on the periodic table shows one element. It usually includes the atomic number, symbol, average atomic mass, and sometimes the name. The table has seven horizontal rows, called periods, and 18 vertical columns, called groups. The group labels appear at the top. To fit the table on one page, parts of two rows are often shown below the main table. These 14 columns belong to the lanthanides and actinides.

Elements can also be sorted by their physical properties. Metals are shiny, malleable, and ductile, and they conduct heat and electricity well. Nonmetals are usually dull and are poor conductors. Metalloids fall between these two groups. They conduct heat and electricity moderately well and have some properties of metals and some of nonmetals. The table also separates main-group elements in columns 1, 2, and 13 through 18, transition metals in columns 3 through 12, and inner transition metals in the two rows at the bottom.

Some groups have special names based on their chemistry. Group 1 elements, except hydrogen, are alkali metals. They form compounds with one atom of the element and one atom of hydrogen. Group 2 elements are alkaline earth metals, and they form compounds with one atom of the element and two atoms of hydrogen. Other named groups include the pnictogens, chalcogens, halogens, and noble gases. The chalcogens are also called the oxygen family. Hydrogen is unusual because it is a nonmetal with properties similar to both group 1 and group 17. It may appear at the top of either group or by itself.

Some elements have atomic masses shown in square brackets. This includes element 43, technetium, element 61, promethium, and most elements with atomic number 84 and higher, such as polonium. These elements are made entirely of unstable, radioactive isotopes. Because their isotopes can vary in abundance or may not occur naturally, an average atomic weight cannot be given. The bracketed value is the mass number of the most stable isotope, which is an approximate atomic mass.
