Types of Enols and Enolates

Enol stability and enolate formation depend on the carbonyl compound. Aldehydes and ketones can form enols, but for simple monocarbonyl compounds only about 1% is present at equilibrium. The enol form is undetectable for acetaldehyde, is only 1.5 × 10 −4 % of acetone, and is only 1.2% of cyclohexanone.

Unsymmetrical ketones can form two regioisomeric enols, and their total amount is still near 1% at equilibrium. This low amount reflects the lower bond energy of a C=C bond compared with a C=O bond. Enols from esters and acids are even less stable because they lose the resonance that stabilizes the carbonyl form.

β-Dicarbonyl compounds are a major exception. These molecules have two carbonyl groups separated by one carbon atom, and they can contain much more enol at equilibrium. Pentane-2,4-dione is 76–80% enol because the double bond is extended by conjugation with the other carbonyl group and because intramolecular hydrogen bonding forms a stable 6-membered ring. In this compound, the methylene group between the two carbonyl groups is the site that enolizes most easily, while 4-hydroxy-4-penten-2-one is present only in negligible amount.

Acyclic ketones can give enol or enolate forms as geometric isomers, either (E) or (Z). Protonation on the same face of the (E) and (Z) forms produces enantiomers in solution. The α hydrogens of esters, nitriles, and 3° amides are also acidic, so their conjugate bases are resonance-stabilized enolates or carbanions.

The negative charge in these species is spread onto the nearby electronegative oxygen or nitrogen atom. Cyanides need a strong base for deprotonation, but their conjugate anion is a linear system like ketene, allene, or carbon dioxide. In primary and secondary amides, the N–H proton is removed before a C–H proton, so amides are the least enolizable among these acid derivatives.

The pKa values show this trend clearly. N,N-dimethylacetamide has a pKa of 30, acetonitrile and ethyl acetate each have a pKa of 25, acetone has 19.2, acetaldehyde has 17, and acetylacetone has 9. Primary and secondary amines form enamines, which are the nitrogen analogs of enols, and strong base can convert them into aza-enolates, the nitrogen analogs of enolates. Nitroalkanes also form enolate-like anions in weakly basic medium because they are more acidic.
