Field Effect Transistor

Field-effect transistors, or FETs, are important parts of electronic circuits. They have three terminals: gate, drain, and source. FETs are unipolar devices, which means they use either electrons or holes as charge carriers. That is different from bipolar transistors, which use both types of carriers.

A FET controls the flow of charge from the source to the drain through a channel. The voltage difference between the gate and source controls how well that channel conducts. This makes the device useful for regulating current in a circuit.

FETs are grouped by the structure of their gate diodes. The main types are Junction-FETs, or JFETs, Metal-Semiconductor FETs, or MESFETs, and Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor FETs, or MOSFETs. Each type also varies by the semiconductor material used in the channel, which helps match the device to different technology needs.

JFETs use the gate-channel pn-junction to control channel conductivity. They are often useful in analog circuits because they have lower input impedance. MESFETs use metal-semiconductor diodes for rectifying contact, and they are preferred in microwave applications because they respond well at high frequencies and are made at lower fabrication temperatures.

MOSFETs are the most common type of FET. They are known for high input impedance and are used often in digital circuits. FETs are also used in amplifiers, switches, and voltage regulators. Their compact size, low noise, reduced power use, and high input impedance make them useful in many electronic systems, especially when compared with Bipolar Junction Transistors.
