The common base configuration&#39;s current gain is constant at low frequencies of the input signal but attenuates after a specific frequency known as the cut-off frequency.
The cut-off frequency for alpha is the frequency at which the current gain is 0.707 times the low-frequency current gain.
Similarly, the beta cut-off frequency is defined for the common emitter configuration. This cut-off frequency is much smaller than the alpha cut-off frequency.
The frequency at which the magnitude of the common emitter gain becomes unity is known as the transition cut-off frequency. The transition cut-off frequency is slightly lower than the alpha cut-off frequency.
The transition frequency can also be expressed in terms of the total time a carrier takes to transit from the emitter to the collector. This includes the emitter delay time, base transit time, and collector transit time.
The most critical delay time is the base transit time, the duration required for minority carriers to cross the base.
To reduce this transit time, high-frequency transistors are designed with a narrow base width.

The base transit time is especially critical; minimizing it through a narrower base width enhances the BJT&#39;s high-frequency response.

BJT frequency limits show when a bipolar junction transistor stops keeping a steady gain. These limits matter because they mark the shift from the pass band to the stop band in an electronic signal. They help explain why a transistor may amplify one range of frequencies well and weaken signals at higher frequencies.

The alpha cut-off frequency applies to the common-base configuration. At low frequencies, the current gain alpha stays stable. Beyond this upper-frequency limit, alpha drops and the transistor becomes less effective at amplifying the signal.

The beta cut-off frequency is more important in the common-emitter configuration. It is much lower than the alpha cut-off frequency. At this point, the common-emitter current gain beta begins to fall, and amplifier performance starts to decline.

The transition frequency comes slightly below the beta cut-off frequency. It shows the gain-bandwidth product of the BJT. At this frequency, the amplifier gain equals one, so it is the highest frequency at which the transistor can still work effectively as an amplifier.

Carrier transit times also help explain this high-frequency behavior. The transition frequency reflects the time carriers take to move from the emitter to the collector. That total time includes emitter delay time, base transit time, and collector transit time. Base transit time is especially important, and a narrower base can reduce it and improve high-frequency response.
