Mortar is a key construction material used to bind masonry units together. It is made from Portland cement, hydrated lime, sand, and water. In walls, it fills gaps between units and helps spread weight more evenly across the structure. That reduces weak spots and supports a stronger build.

Mortar also protects masonry from outside conditions. It acts as a barrier against water and wind, which helps safeguard the inside of the structure. It can also help correct surface irregularities in masonry units. In addition, it holds steel reinforcements and other structural parts in place within walls.

The color of mortar matters as well as its strength. Because it covers a large visible area, it has a major effect on the look of brick, stone, or concrete masonry walls. Builders can adjust the color with organic pigments. White mortar is made with specific white ingredients, and sample walls are often built before major projects to choose the best brick-and-mortar color combination.
