Water retention is also important. It keeps mortar from losing moisture too quickly to the air or to absorbent masonry units. When mortar holds water well, it stays plastic and workable long enough to form a strong bond.

Bond strength affects how firmly mortar sticks to masonry units and how well it resists tensile forces, which are pulling forces. This property depends on the mortar texture, the absorption rate of the masonry units, and the quality of workmanship. Durability and compressive strength are also essential.
