Brick quality affects how masonry holds up, looks, and performs over time. Durability, strength, and appearance are all used to judge which bricks fit a specific job. These features help builders choose bricks for walls, facades, and other construction uses.

Durability is closely tied to freeze-thaw action. In freeze-thaw, water absorbed by a brick expands when it freezes. That expansion can damage the brick, especially if the water melts and refreezes. Bricks are graded for durability as SW, MW, and NW. SW-grade bricks are the most durable. They also have high strength and low water absorption.

Brick strength is usually measured by compressive strength, which is the ability to resist crushing forces. Typical brick strength values range from 1500 to 3000 pounds per square inch. Strength depends on more than the brick alone. It also depends on mortar quality, any reinforcement added, and the overall integrity of the masonry.

Brick appearance can vary for several reasons. Size and shape changes can affect both looks and function. Visible damage, such as chips on the face or corners, also matters. Chippage is especially important for facing bricks and hollow bricks because these are often used where visual appeal is important.

Brick color comes mainly from the type of clay used. The natural properties of the clay affect the final color. Surface texture also depends on how the brick is made. Dies, molds, and other attachments can imprint or change the surface during production.
