Survey tape measurements can be affected by several common mistakes that reduce accuracy. Misalignment of the tape is one major source of error. A rear tapeman can use a telescope to guide the head tapeman, but human limits still allow small mistakes in alignment, pin placement, and tape reading.

Reading the tape can also be confusing when markings are worn with age. A surveyor may mistake a six for a nine or make other small visual errors. These reading mistakes become more common as the tape surface wears down. Even the tape’s starting point can create trouble if it begins slightly inward and the change is not noticed.

Sagging is another important problem. When a tape is supported only at its ends, it curves downward and gives a shortened horizontal distance. Surveyors correct for this with a sag correction, which adjusts the measured length for the tape’s curve. Wind can also disturb plumb bobs or push the tape sideways, making it harder to keep a straight line.

Small endpoint errors matter as well. Taping pins must be placed exactly at the plumb bob’s mark, and even a slight miss can change the result. Accurate surveying depends on careful observation, steady handling of the tape, and applying the right corrections at each step.
