Marking a site boundary with a compass uses a traverse, which is a line-by-line surveying path. The method relies on the bearings and lengths of each boundary side. It helps surveyors place corner points with accuracy.

The process begins with the site details. These include the bearing and length of every boundary line. Surveyors first calculate the latitude and departure of each side. Latitude is the north-south part of a line, and departure is the east-west part. This check shows whether the traverse closes correctly and whether the boundary is free from error.

The survey starts from a known point, such as Point A. Point A is often linked to permanent reference marks. Using the given bearing and length, the compass is set to align a range pole and locate Point B. The surveyor then checks the back bearing of that side to confirm the mark is correct.

After Point B is fixed, the compass is moved to Point B. The next boundary line is then ranged out, and the next corner is marked. This same step-by-step process continues for each corner of the site. As each point is marked, the back bearing is verified to keep the work accurate.

The survey ends when the traverse is closed and the final side returns to the starting point. If the last point matches the original bearing and length, the boundary has been set correctly. This systematic compass method gives a reliable site outline.
