icp-ms for detecting iron ions

ICP-MS is a mass spectrometry method used to detect elements in a sample, with iron shown here as the example. Mass spectrometry helps identify unknown compounds, measure known materials, and study the structure and chemical properties of molecules. It does this by turning chemical compounds into ions so they can be analyzed.

A mass spectrometer has three main parts: an ionization source, an analyzer, and a detector. In inductively coupled plasma, or ICP, samples with elements of interest enter argon plasma as aerosol droplets. The plasma dries the droplets, breaks the molecules apart, and removes an electron from the components that will be measured.

Other ionization methods are also used for different sample types. Electrospray ionization, or ESI, and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization, or MALDI, are used to analyze biological samples. After ionization, the ions are separated by their mass-to-charge ratio, written as m/z, and the instrument measures the relative abundance of each ion type.

The detector often uses an electron multiplier. When ions hit a charged anode, they trigger a cascade that creates more electrons. An electrical circuit connected to a computer then records the signal.
