Question 1

What is the cytoskeleton and what are its main functions in cells?

Accepted Answer

The cytoskeleton is a dynamic network of protein filaments that provides structural support and enables cellular movement. It maintains cell shape, facilitates transport of materials within the cell, and allows cells to move and change form. The cytoskeleton is essential for organizing the cytoplasm and coordinating cellular activities throughout the cell.

Question 2

What are the three main types of cytoskeletal filaments?

Accepted Answer

The three primary components are microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments. Microfilaments are thin actin-based structures involved in cell movement and contraction. Microtubules are hollow cylindrical structures that organize the cell and facilitate transport. Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength and stability to cells.

Question 3

How do microtubules contribute to cell organization?

Accepted Answer

Microtubules radiate from organizing centers and form a three-dimensional lattice that structures the cytoplasm and organizes cellular components. They serve as tracks for transporting vesicles and organelles throughout the cell. Microtubules also play crucial roles in cell division and establishing cell polarity during development.

Question 4

What role do microfilaments play in cellular movement?

Accepted Answer

Microfilaments are composed of actin protein and interact with myosin to generate contractile forces within cells. These interactions enable cell locomotion, muscle contraction, and cytokinesis during cell division. Microfilaments also support the formation of cellular projections and maintain overall cell shape and integrity.

Question 5

Why are intermediate filaments important for cell stability?

Accepted Answer

Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength and resist deformation forces applied to cells during stress. They anchor the nucleus and other organelles in place, preventing damage during physical strain. These filaments are particularly abundant in cells subject to mechanical stress, such as muscle and skin cells.

Question 6

How does the cytoskeleton enable intracellular transport?

Accepted Answer

Microtubules and microfilaments act as tracks along which motor proteins transport vesicles and organelles throughout the cell. Kinesin and dynein proteins move cargo along microtubules, while myosin motors transport materials along microfilaments. This organized system ensures efficient delivery of molecules to their destinations.

Question 7

How is the cytoskeleton organized in relation to centrioles?

Accepted Answer

Centrioles and centrosomes serve as the primary organizing center for microtubules in animal cells. Microtubules radiate outward from this region, creating the structural framework of the cytoskeleton. Understanding centrioles and centrosomes is essential to comprehending overall cytoskeletal organization and cellular structure.
