Question 1

What is simple epithelium and how does its structure relate to its function?

Accepted Answer

Simple epithelium is a monolayer of cells covering the basement membrane, with cell shape reflecting tissue function. The thinness of simple epithelial cells facilitates rapid absorption and secretion of selective substances. This single-layer structure minimizes barriers to transport, making simple epithelium ideal for sites requiring efficient exchange of gases, nutrients, and other chemical compounds across body surfaces.

Question 2

Where is simple squamous epithelium found and what are its two main forms?

Accepted Answer

Simple squamous epithelium consists of flattened cells forming a smooth barrier that minimizes friction while enabling gas and nutrient exchange. Its two forms are endothelium, which lines blood and lymph vessels to facilitate fluid flow, and mesothelium, which forms a slippery protective film lining internal body cavities and covering organs like the lungs, heart, and abdominal structures.

Question 3

How do simple cuboidal epithelial cells differ from simple columnar cells in structure and location?

Accepted Answer

Simple cuboidal epithelium contains box-like cells of equal height and width with round nuclei near the cell center, lining kidney tubules where they facilitate waste secretion and nutrient reabsorption. Simple columnar epithelium consists of tightly packed tall cells with elongated nuclei at the basal end, forming the intestinal lining with microvilli for enhanced nutrient absorption and the stomach lining with tubular glands secreting digestive juices.

Question 4

What role do microvilli play in simple columnar epithelium of the intestines?

Accepted Answer

Microvilli are finger-like membrane protrusions on the apical surface of intestinal columnar cells that significantly enhance nutrient absorption. These structures increase the surface area available for transport, allowing the epithelium to absorb nutrients more efficiently from food passing through the digestive tract.

Question 5

What is pseudostratified epithelium and where does it occur in the body?

Accepted Answer

Pseudostratified epithelium is a specialization of simple columnar epithelium containing cells of varying heights and nuclei at different levels, creating an illusion of multiple layers. Found in the respiratory tract, pseudostratified columnar epithelium bears cilia that propel dust and foreign bodies toward the outside, providing a protective function while maintaining the efficiency of a simple epithelium.

Question 6

What are myoepithelial cells and how do they function in glands?

Accepted Answer

Myoepithelial cells, or basket cells, are contractile cells composed of actin and myosin filaments that form a layer around secretory cells in various glands including salivary, mammary, and sweat glands. Upon receiving nerve signals, myoepithelial cells contract to help release glandular products, playing an essential role in secretion.

Question 7

How does mesothelium protect internal organs during body movements?

Accepted Answer

Mesothelium, a simple squamous epithelium, forms a slippery protective film that lines internal body cavities and covers organs externally. Mesothelial cells secrete lubricating fluid that reduces friction, preventing internal organs from rubbing against each other during breathing, heart pumping, and digestive movements.
