Question 1

What is the primary function of smooth muscle in hollow organs?

Accepted Answer

Smooth muscle facilitates involuntary movements of internal organs by enabling coordinated contractions. In hollow organs like the intestines, smooth muscle layers contract and relax to mix substances and propel contents through passages. This coordinated activity occurs because muscle fibers are connected by gap junctions, allowing them to function as a single unit without conscious control.

Question 2

How do longitudinal and circular muscle layers work together in the intestines?

Accepted Answer

Longitudinal layers run along the intestine's length and shorten it when contracting. Circular layers wrap around the circumference and constrict the inner cavity. By alternately contracting and relaxing, these layers create peristalsis, which mixes food and moves it through the digestive tract while optimizing nutrient absorption.

Question 3

What distinguishes multi-unit smooth muscle from visceral smooth muscle?

Accepted Answer

Multi-unit smooth muscle fibers operate independently, each with individual nerve endings that stimulate specific areas. Unlike visceral smooth muscle, which contracts as a coordinated unit, multi-unit fibers allow precise, localized control. This organization is found in organs like the eye and large pulmonary arteries, enabling targeted responses to physiological demands.

Question 4

How do smooth muscles in pulmonary arteries regulate blood oxygenation?

Accepted Answer

Multi-unit smooth muscles in large pulmonary arteries adjust lumen diameter to redirect blood flow to well-ventilated lung regions. This precise control enhances oxygenation by directing blood where gas exchange is most efficient. The muscles respond to physiological demands, ensuring oxygen delivery matches the body's changing needs.

Question 5

Why are gap junctions important in visceral smooth muscle tissue?

Accepted Answer

Gap junctions connect smooth muscle fibers in hollow organs, enabling electrical and chemical communication between cells. This connection allows fibers to contract synchronously as a single coordinated unit rather than individually. This unified contraction is essential for effective organ function, such as moving food through the digestive tract or regulating blood vessel diameter.

Question 6

How do smooth muscles adjust airway diameter in response to oxygen demands?

Accepted Answer

Smooth muscles in the respiratory system alter airway diameter by contracting or relaxing in response to the body's oxygen requirements. When oxygen demand increases, these muscles relax to increase airflow. This involuntary adjustment ensures adequate oxygen delivery without conscious effort, demonstrating smooth muscle adaptability to changing physiological conditions.

Question 7

What role do smooth muscles play in regulating blood pressure and flow?

Accepted Answer

Smooth muscles in blood vessel walls regulate blood pressure and flow by altering vessel diameter. When muscles contract, they narrow the vessel lumen, increasing pressure and reducing flow. When they relax, the lumen widens, decreasing pressure and increasing flow. This dynamic regulation maintains cardiovascular homeostasis and directs blood to tissues based on metabolic needs.
